Eighteen-year-old Ellie Barnard from Heathfield in East Sussex is heading to Badminton to compete in the Mitsubishi Motors Cup BE90 competition with her own eight-year-old, Templar Esprit. Ellie’s family bought Templar Esprit aka Pogga as a just backed four-year-old and she has produced him herself, completing their first BE90 at Brightling in 2015.
The combination started 2017 with a win at Chilham, and several good placings followed throughout the season, which included a second in the Regional Final at Firle International in August qualifying them for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup BE90 Final at Badminton.
Ellie will be supported at Badminton by her mother, Gill, and is hoping Pogga’s laidback attitude stays for the competition. She said: “He is extremely laid back and nothing fazes him.”
A student at Heathfield Community College, Ellie’s trip to Badminton comes just weeks before her A’ level examinations in Geography, Business Studies and English Literature. Ellie plans a future working with horses and hopes to find a working pupil position at an event yard. She is also looking forward to stepping Pogga up to Novice level and hopes to catch the selectors eyes for the Under 18 Championships, which are held at Frickley Park in South Yorkshire later in the year.
