Hard work pays off for Ella with first BE win at Brightling International

Ella Lucas first Brightling

Ella Lucas claimed the win in Section D of the BE90 at Brightling Park International Horse Trials on Saturday 30th June, riding The Chestnut, aka Barney. Barney and Ella progressed together from novices, with Barney being Ella’s first horse, and Barney himself couldn’t jump or be ridden in an outline when Ella acquired him.

Over the past four years they have combined fun pastimes such as bareback riding and trick training with intense schooling, particularly on dressage, to reach their winning score of 28 at Brightling. Such hard work had to fit around Ella’s A Levels, as well as numerous part time jobs which she held to fund lessons. Their efforts paid off, gaining four tickets to regional finals this season with the ultimate aim of competing at Badminton Grassroots next year.

Despite Ella leaving for university in September, her first choice Sussex is only twenty minutes away so that she can stay close to Barney, hopefully their winning streak will continue into next season. Ella expressed thanks to her mum Kirsty Newman for accompanying her to competitions, as well as her sponsor Harry Hall who saw the potential in the pair way back in 2015.
