New leader at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials

Pippa Funnell and Billy The Biz

The USA’s Clark Montgomery has taken a commanding lead at lunchtime on the second day of dressage at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials on 18th September 2015.

Riding Holly and William Becker’s Loughan Glen, Clark performed a beautiful test for a mark of 33.8 – well ahead of Germany’s Sandra Auffarth, the current World Champion, who scored 37.2 yesterday on Ispo.

Britain’s Pippa Funnell scored 39.3 on Billy The Biz to take third place in the CCI3* on Friday morning.

Billy The Biz, a grey 10-year-old by Cevin Z, is owned by Carol Toliver, who also owns Mirage D’Elle, currently in 25th place in the same class.

Pippa said: “He’s one who show jumped through his younger career. He’s come through the [eventing] grades pretty quickly as he has the mileage with the jumping but I’ve had a couple of little blips where has been eager and over-jumped into water and we’ve had a dunking, so I’m going to have to sit back and tight tomorrow.

“Blenheim is one of my favourite events; you wonder where the years have gone!”

Last year’s winner of the CIC3* for eight-and-nine-year-old horses, New Zealand’s Jonelle Price, has held her lead in the class again at this stage. She scored 33.2 – but this morning France’s Astier Nicolas became the second rider to score in the 30s when pulling off a test of 39.4 with Helen and Paul Fearn’s Spes Addit Or.

China’s Alex Hua Tian remains in the runner-up spot on a mark of 40.6 with Don Geniro.
