Charity open day returns after success of the event last year
The charity event, the Betfair Newmarket Open Day will this year be held on Sunday 22nd September. Known as the headquarters of horseracing in the UK, Newmarket in Suffolk, will once again open its doors to the public, providing a unique insight into the day to day running of some of the world’s most successful racing stables. In addition to this fantastic opportunity, there will be a fun-filled program of activities and entertainment suitable for the whole family. The three charity beneficiaries of this year’s Open Day will be the British Racing School, The National Horseracing Museum and the New Astley Club, a social welfare charity with the aim of building strong links within the racing community, particularly in Newmarket.
During the morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm trainers including, Ed Dunlop and Luca Cumani will open their yards providing the opportunity to see behind-the-scenes of the running and daily routines of their training operations. This will also give visitors a chance to meet some of Newmarket’s famous four-legged athletes. Between 9 and 10am horses will be cantered on Warren Hill with trainers providing commentaries about the horses.
Other equine facilities open throughout the day include Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons, an internationally renowned equine veterinary practice, the National Horseracing Museum, the British Racing School and the National Stud, which has been situated in Newmarket since 1963.
The afternoon sees the Rowley Mile Racecourse open up for an exciting range of activities, displays and trade stands. Events will include a Shetland Pony Grand National, Scurry Driving and Mounted Games when top jockeys will go head to head. There will be a wide range of trade stands situated around the racecourse selling everything from clothing and jewelry to delicious pies and cakes. In addition there will be children’s entertainment and pony rides running during the afternoon, so there is something for all the family.
Julian Richmond-Watson, Chairman of the Event commented, ‘After the success of the Newmarket Open Day and support of all those who attended and worked on the event last year we are delighted to be hosting it again in 2013.’
